Birth of the Supreme Lord

Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva in the prison of the tyrant King Kamsa. It was prophesied that Devaki’s eighth son would destroy Kamsa, so he imprisoned them. However, at the time of Krishna’s birth, the prison doors miraculously opened, and Vasudeva carried baby Krishna across the raging Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda Baba.
